[Teaching Day 2]

Yesterday [2/2/2006]: BD

I taught a double period freshman class. I taught graphing systems of inequalities. I had a great lesson plan, but I was nervous when I got in front of the students. Before the lesson, my cooperating teacher told me that I should explain the problems via several steps and she praised my lesson plan. I got so nervous, and I drop the white board markers, and I changed my correct solution to an incorrect solution and then back to the original solution. I made the points I need to make about overlapping in regards to the solution point or lack of solution points.

I know some days will be more difficult than others, but I have to learn form my mistakes. I think I was concentrating too much. Teacher has to be natural. The students took advantage of my nervousness by raising their voices and not listening to my directions.

After taught:

Me: (What I thought )

Good problem of the day (POD)

Questions: What?, How ?, When?

My nervousness caused me to be unclear. I erased the aim.

Cooperating-Teacher(what she told ):

I should never erase the aim because an administrator could randomly drop in. I told her I did that due to my nervousness.

It is difficult to control freshman students. I will try to be less nervous next time.

There is no telling how many miles you will have to run while chasing a dream.

[[[Adventure Infinity :Teaching 1]]]

Yesterday [2/1/2006]: GD

I officially started teaching. I taught a senior class preparing for the Math A regents in June 06. The topic I taught was transformations. I started the mini-lesson by telling them that they were hired to redesign Six Flag Great Adventure, and they had to follow the different rules type of transformation to do their job correctly. I explained reflection (in the x-axis and y-axis), translations, dilations and rotations in the coordinate plane. I gave the students a handout package that included the do now, formula sheet, and exercises. I used transparencies to illustrate different types of transformation.

Before Lesson:

I hoped that I would not get nervous.
I hope that they would offer solutions to my questions.

During the Lesson:

I was pleased that they were quiet interactive.
When I noticed they did not understand a concept, I gave more examples.

My After thoughts:

Good use of Visuals
Called on students
Encouraged Group work

Shorten the do now
More students centered
Less yes/no questioning

Cooperating Teacher’s Comments

My lesson was good, but I need to shorten the do now.

*Professional (Correct, clear and concise)

My Suggestion to you and myself:

Be confident and use different modes of representation such visuals to keep students' attention.

[[[Adventure # 3:The next four months]]]

Yesterday, I started my student teaching at a high school.

I have always wanted to become a math teacher.

This semester,

I have to work full time and teach fulltime. I have to student-teach for 6 periods. I also have to work 8 hours a day. This is my last semester and the most time difficult one. For the next 4 months, I have to leave my house 6AM and return 9PM. When I am home I work on lesson plans, homeworks and projects. I teach in the morning and work form midday into the night.

Without my wife's support, I would crumble. She encouraged me to return to school so that I can pursue my dream. I know it is difficult on her and my baby not having me at home as much as they want. I love her.

I will try my best to spend time with them on the weekend.

Back to work. I am a full time Database Programmer, Husband, Daddy and Student.

I was not able the write yesterday because I was busy shopping for my baby and the apartment. I moved into a new apartment December 31,05 (Okay Jan 06).

My mother-in-law baby-sat for us. We spent most of the day at Toys-R-Us and Home Depot. Did I mention how much I love shopping??? After we finish, I returned home to write lesson plans for this week, but I feel asleep (I was tired). However, I stayed up until 12:30 AM writing lesson plans.

I took a while to create this blog but better late than never.
